Texas Watchdog Reveals More Dirt In KTRU Sale
Texas Watchdog scores another big thumbs-up from us for shining a little more light on the shady dealings involved in the UH-Rice deal to sell KTRU.
This includes UH spending $200K for a broker, and references to a study projecting that not only will UH spend nearly $10 million on the station, but also that the subsequent all-classical station is projected to LOSE a million dollars per year.

Bun B talks about his role as professor |... →

Part of the reason my posting was slow this week is that I did several interviews. Among them was this great chat with Bun B and Dr. Pinn, who are co-teaching a Religion & Hip-Hop course at Rice University this semester.

You may have seen a slightly condensed version of this in the print edition of this week’s 29-95. Unfortunately, due...

Roky Moon & Bolt Record New Album In One Day →
I was the lucky person who got to visit the recording sessions for Roky Moon & Bolt’s forthcoming album, American Honey. Read about it over at the Houston Press. Also, please forgive the “honey in the jar” line, as it’s my editor’s fault. Jeoaf texted me that American Honey was in the can.

Paris Falls CD Release Show W/ A.P. Dugas and The... →
One more for you to hit, this one’s on Saturday. Specifically cool about this one is the fact that Airon Paul Dugas & The Relgion will be playing a set. It’ll be the last performance ever, too, as the band is split between Seattle & Austin now.

Tax The Wolf Frees The Sun
Out of everything from 2010, this album is something that I have been criminally negligent when it comes to posting. Tax The Wolf put together a rolling, soaring, and diving mixture of progressive and psychedelic rock, were kind enough to pass me a copy of it, and I let it sink down my to-do list like a boulder.
Hopefully this post will make up for it in some minuscule way. Because today...

2010 Redux: TIME
Go ahead and click play up there.
What you’re listening to is the latest musical endeavor of Chris Ryan, a man whose local music ubiquity I touched on when I nominated him as my Person of the Year in our Houston Press round table.
It’s a nice drone-style, shoegazey, psych project; modern stoner rock, if you will - the sort of thing that makes me wish I bought weed, so that I...

Ozone City Outrage : Houston's Punk History →
Good grief. I could spend hours diving into the archives at Ozone City Outrage. If you’re interested in seeing old photos and flyers from the Houston punk world, make sure to add this to your feed readers or bookmarks. A quick scroll through the right hand column should give you a good idea of the scope of the site. Definitely click through and have a look.

2010 Redux: Day of the Woman
As I said, I’m going to spend some time highlighting some things from 2010 that I wished I’d covered. Day of the Woman is an exceptional release on San Antonio’s Exponential Records, one that I’ve listened to a ton, and is definitely worth some of your time. It’s a collaborative effort, blending sounds from Yppah (Joe Corrales, Houston), Pollination, and Stenographer...

Many thanks to my comrade, the honorable Jeremy Hart, for the kind words he posted over at Space City Rock. Also, everyone should thank Jeremy, as his prodding is responsible for the layout switch here at H-Town Rock: one that now allows comments, via Disqus implementation. In other words, let that feedback fly! And yes, I still want to know about all your music-related Twitter accounts.

Rocks Off Round Table Redux
I promise not to turn this blog into a mere reposting of Houston Press articles, but that’s what this post is going to be. In order to allow the staff a couple days off during the holiday, several of our crew (including myself) pitched in to some community posts. Included are some great opinions on the best albums, songs, and shows of the year, the worst crowds we saw, and our pledges for...
