I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention The Cutters free CD release show at Mango’s tonight. Also on the bill is the two-man sludgy punk duo Davey Crockett - whose Exile In Trashtown is a great album I’ve been meaning to write about for a while, and Denton’s Occult Detective Club.
The whole shindig is free, and starts at 8pm. See you there.

So there’s a free show on Wednesday night at Mango’s, and H-Town Rock is of the opinion that you should be in attendance.
The Energy is a damn good band. They just finished up their second album, too.
Born Liars is teasing that this may be their final Houston show. Or maybe it’ll be in November. Either way, catch ‘em before they’re gone.
Did I say it’s free? ‘Cause it’s free.
This might be a stupid question…
but who’s going to Mango’s tonight to see The Batusis? It’s only two of punk’s legends - Sylvain Sylvain of New York Dolls and Cheetah Chrome from The Dead Boys.
Tickets are available here.
Chelsea Hotel, Blower, & Zipperneck open the show.
Bueller?
Tinnitus: Casiotone For The Painfully Alone at Mango’s
CFTPA - Scattered Pearls
Tuesday was a crazy day - and if I didn’t already have enough to do, I managed to compound it when I remembered that Casiotone For The Painfully Alone would be performing at Mango’s.
That was sealed once I headed over to cftpa.org and discovered that Owen Ashworth, the man behind the music, was using this as a farewell tour. He’s going to retire CFTPA on December 5th - the 13th anniversary of the first show he ever played under the moniker. Now, I’ve no shame in waxing fanboyish over an artist that I really love, and I think I’ve determined that Ashworth is my Morrissey, so I certainly wasn’t going to miss it.
CFTPA - Man O’ War
It was a sparse crowd, with the CocoRosie show at the newly relaunched Fitzgerald’s pulling most of the weight in town on Tuesday. But a Casiotone show always feels intimate, and it was almost apropos. Being as it would be the last such show in Houston, I drug out the old Fuji to shoot a couple videos. My apologies for the dark nature of several of them, but the camera is only so capable in the low light.
CFTPA - Bobby Malone Moves Home
Ashworth opened with a few solo songs before bringing up his tourmates Otouto to join him. I was saddened that he cut Tom Justice, The Choir Boy Robber, but I bopped along happily to the set, as usual.
CFTPA - Killers
When asked why he’s bringing Casiotone to a close, Ashworth is quick to mention that he’s not done playing music, stating that he’s going to continue doing so under the name Advance Base. He says it just felt like a good time to finish off the CFTPA project, and that he’s looking forward to crafting some new material and going forward “without a back catalog.” It sounds like a way for him to reinvent his music, possibly without too drastic a change, but not carry the weight of people asking why he doesn’t sound like his old stuff or play his old songs. Whatever happens, I’ll be looking forward to it. Here’s one more video, Natural Light. Enjoy.
