The band is releasing a 7” just in time for the tour, their first new music out on New West Records. The limited-edition single features the track “Gag Reflections,” a beefy pop track that the band penned while on their recent European tour, b-sided with a cover of The B-52s “Summer Of Love.” The group will have the new single with them on tour, and it should be in select Houston record stores on May 10. Cactus Music is a pretty safe bet for those wanting to snag a copy. Stream the single below.
Upcoming Releases
A couple recent conversations have revealed that there will be a Black Congress LP out around April, and that Grandfather Child’s LP on New West will likely be out in May.
The new Buxton album comes out in late January, by the way.
Grandfather Child signs with New West | 29-95.com
Andrew Dansby at 29-95 broke the story yesterday that New West Records has signed Grandfather Child. Sweet deal!
This news is not all together surprising, given that three of Grandfather Child’s four members are already involved with New West act Robert Ellis (hint: one’s Robert, the others are Ryan and Geoffrey). But it is exciting news, as it means there’s likely some sort of album in the works.
These boys deserve it. Congratulations all around.
Wild Moccasins Join Tumblr
Following the path of their label-mates, Wild Moccasins have hopped on Tumblr as well. Head over and give ‘em a follow.
For those not familiar with the Moccasins’ music, Cactus Music is also hosting a listening party for the re-release of their album Skin Collision Past on New West on July 29th. It appears that the band will be dropping some of their own selections on the turntables as well, and there will be free beer available.
Yet another great poster by Shelby Hohl. The new Robert Ellis album Photographs - which will be his first on New West Records, will be released with a show at Fitzgerald’s on July 6. We trust you’ll be there.
Signings Galore
Word has been rolling out over the past few weeks about several Houston artists signing to labels. That’s pretty cool, because it provides them with some additional support - and hopefully that means some funding to record and tour, as well as marketing and promotion of the music being made.
In news that was somewhat expected, Austin/Los Angeles based New West Records signed Buxton, Wild Moccasins, and Robert Ellis to deals. Given that George Fontaine, president of New West, is a partner in the re-launched Cactus Music, it wasn’t terribly surprising to see some of the prime talent plucked. These will be three-album deals for each artist, with Buxton’s upcoming Nothing Here Seems Strange released soon. Wild Moccasins’ Skin Collision Past will be re-released, with the four tracks of the Microscopic Metronomes EP included as well. Robert’s first album on the deal will be split between solo songs and songs with The Boys backing him.

ZenHill Records, the collaborative effort of Zenfilm’s W. Ross Wells and Sugar Hill’s Dan Workman, has been filling out their roster as well. Recently The Tontons, Roky Moon & Bolt, Peekaboo Theory, Craig Kinsey, and Kinsey’s Sideshow Tramps have all signed deals with the label. The Tontons have been in and out of the studio working on a new album, while Roky Moon & Bolt knocked out their upcoming full-length American Honey in a single day.
Space City Records also wrote in to announce that they’d added local crew Twenty Eleven to their roster. Their album Renewable Energy was recently released.
Congratulations to everyone! This is yet another step in the right direction for getting Houston music recognized on a larger level.
