Heights Vinyl Prepares To Plant Its Flag - Rocks Off
Houston’s about to gain a record store in November. Before that happens, however, there’ll be a giant 45 sale this Saturday, September 24 in the parking lot out front of the future Heights Vinyl shop. Find out more in this article I wrote for the Houston Press.

Dig This (Vol. 2) - Rocks Off
The second installment of Dig This is up now at the Houston Press. Same allotment of five local acts for your perusal, so hop to it.
A Rap Guide To The HISD Football Playbook - Rocks Off
First, allow me to state that Shea Serrano is one of my favorite writers at Rocks Off.
Second, he is perhaps at his funniest when discussing his adorable matching ninja children, as well as his middle school students.
This newest article from him has ascended to my favorite articles in Rocks Off history, wherein he describes his method of using local hip-hop references to disguise football plays.
Brilliant, and fun. Go read.
Yesterday the Houston Press announced still more additions to the BestFest lineup. Festival goers can now look forward to witnessing Los Skarnales, The Last Place You Look, Nick Gaitan & The Umbrella Man, the Honky Tonk Blood trio of John Evans, Craig Kinsey and Hank Schyma, and as they added later in the day, Hell City Kings.

While much of the talk on Saturday was about the changes happening to The Mink, these four old stalwarts put on a raucous show at The Continental Club. Click through to see some of my photos from the night and Chris Gray’s wonderful commentary. (via Saturday Night: Wild Men Of Rock At The Continental Club - Rocks Off)
Guess Who’s Back?! Scarface! (@BrotherMob) - House of Blues Houston on Flickr.
Check this Scarface photo out, from my fellow shooter Marco Torres. This was at the DMX show last week, and is believed to be Scarface’s first public appearance since being released from prison. Go read Shea Serrano’s awesome review of the show at Rocks Off.

Mink Changes Owners, Management Nearly Overnight
Wow. This one is a doozy. Apparently on Thursday a pair of lesbians bought out The Mink from the owner of the lease. According to one of the long-standing Mink employees (who asked not to be named), all but three of the employees - the door guy, bar back, and one other - have quit over the course of Friday and Saturday. The new owners have promised to make little changes and attempt to keep the venue the same (and the booked shows on the calendar), but former employees seem far less optimistic about the ordeal. Brandon Lemons, who had been booking the shows, has declared that he’s attempting to salvage as many previously booked shows as possible, trying to find venues to which they can be moved. “New management isn’t a fan of the [H]ouston music scene apparently,” Lemons said in a post on the Hands Up Houston forum. “We’re hoping to find a place that we can come in and kind of just take over, and say ‘we’ll make you a ton of money,’” said an employee who wished to remain anonymous. “We’ve got the whole setup, all the staff - we just need a bar.” Hopefully something good comes along and the former Mink staff can work out a deal. Those are people that genuinely care about the local music scene, and it’d be nice to see them continuing to provide a space for it.

More Houston Press BestFest Adds - Rocks Off
![]()
Rocks Off just announced that they’ve added Toadies, Wild Moccasins, and Little Joe Washington to their inaugural Houston Press Best Of Houston BestFest lineup, which is steps away from being complete.
While the Moccs and Little Joe aren’t too surprising, Toadies are - and I’m happy for it. There’s still a few acts yet to be announced, and you can still grab a ticket for the September 24 and 25 festivities at the pre-sale price of twenty-five bucks before midnight tonight.
